State of Play Recap: God of War Laufey Steals the Show

Sony's summer showcase revealed Faye as a new playable hero, alongside fresh looks at Silent Hill Townfall and Until Dawn 2.

PlayStation’s June State of Play delivered over an hour of trailers, gameplay reveals, and release date confirmations, but one announcement clearly dominated the conversation afterward. God of War Laufey pulled back the curtain on an entry unlike anything the franchise has attempted before, and the reaction across the PlayStation community has made it the defining moment of the show months after it actually aired.

Faye Takes Center Stage

Rather than continuing Kratos and Atreus’s story directly, God of War Laufey shifts the spotlight to Faye, Kratos’s late wife and Atreus’s mother, who has largely existed as a memory and narrative device across the two most recent mainline entries. The reveal trailer, backed by a full twenty-minute gameplay demonstration, showed Faye awakening unexpectedly in the aftermath of her own funeral, discovering that the careful protections she arranged for her family are now unraveling. Her journey takes her into the Everywhen, an afterlife realm where deities from across multiple mythologies scheme and clash for power amid genuinely dangerous magic. It’s a structurally bold choice for the series, essentially telling a story that runs parallel to the events players already know from the two previous games rather than pushing the timeline forward, and it’s set to release on PS5 on February 16, 2027.

A Packed Show Beyond Kratos’s World

Laufey wasn’t the only major reveal of the night. Sony also gave audiences their first proper look at Silent Hill Townfall and confirmed Until Dawn 2, both new announcements that expanded PlayStation’s growing horror portfolio in directions fans have been requesting for years. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis received fresh coverage as well, continuing to build anticipation for Lara Croft’s next outing. On the release-date front, the show confirmed timing updates for several previously announced titles, including Ace Combat 8, Control Resonant, Dune: Awakening, and Phantom Blade Zero, giving fans concrete windows to plan around rather than vague “coming soon” messaging. Marvel’s Wolverine also received renewed attention during the broadcast, keeping one of Insomniac’s most anticipated projects firmly in the conversation even without a full release date attached.

Taken as a whole, the show reinforced a pattern that’s become common with recent State of Play broadcasts: rather than centering on a single blockbuster reveal, Sony spread attention across multiple genres and audiences, mixing horror, action, racing, and adventure into a single broadcast designed to have something for nearly every PlayStation owner.

Months later, it’s Laufey’s reveal that continues to generate the most discussion, largely because of how unexpected the narrative pivot toward Faye actually was. With a February 2027 release date now locked in, players have a considerable wait ahead of them, but the ambition on display during that twenty-minute gameplay reveal has set expectations extremely high for what could be one of the more narratively daring entries the God of War series has ever produced.
