State of Decay 3: Undead Labs Splits From Xbox, Game Still Alive

Undead Labs has been sold to new, unnamed owners after Xbox's restructuring, but the studio insists State of Decay 3 remains on track for 2027.

State of Decay 3 has had a turbulent year even by the standards of a game already known for a long and quiet development cycle, and August brings the latest twist: developer Undead Labs has officially split from Xbox Game Studios, sold to new ownership as part of a broader restructuring that also saw Microsoft part ways with several other internal teams.

A Studio Sale Amid Broader Xbox Layoffs

The split was confirmed on July 6, 2026, when Undead Labs entered terms to join new ownership with additional funding earmarked specifically to help finish State of Decay 3. Xbox has not named the buyer publicly, leaving one of the more consequential details of the deal still shrouded in mystery. The move came as part of a wider reset within Xbox Game Studios that reportedly included roughly 3,200 layoffs and saw multiple studios either sold off or spun out as independent operations; alongside Undead Labs, Ninja Theory was also sold, while Double Fine Productions and Compulsion Games transitioned into independent studios retaining ownership of their respective IPs.

Xbox leadership has framed the change as a way to ensure State of Decay 3 reaches completion rather than a sign the project is in jeopardy, with the funding arrangement specifically structured to support the game through to release. According to reporting at the time, the deal also frees Undead Labs from certain Xbox-controlling terms going forward, including the previous expectation that the finished game would need to launch on Xbox Game Pass. Whether State of Decay 3 ultimately keeps its Game Pass day-one status or charts a different release strategy under its new ownership remains one of the more interesting open questions to watch heading toward launch.

The Game Itself Remains on Track

Despite the corporate upheaval, the development side of the story has actually been fairly encouraging. State of Decay 3 received its first-ever gameplay reveal at the Xbox Games Showcase back in June, giving fans a proper look at the open-world survival sequel’s take on exploration, settlement building, weapon crafting, multiplayer, and, of course, zombie slaying. Alpha testing for the game began in May, giving a limited group of players early hands-on access to the evolving world well ahead of any public release. The current release window points to February 2027, with the game confirmed for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and, notably, PlayStation 5, continuing the trend of major Xbox-developed titles finding their way onto Sony’s console.

Undead Labs itself has been vocal about its commitment to the community throughout the transition, reiterating publicly that State of Decay 3 is still coming despite the change in corporate structure. For a franchise with a genuinely passionate but patient fanbase, that reassurance carries real weight; the original State of Decay 2 launched back in 2018, meaning longtime followers have already waited years for a proper sequel and are understandably attentive to any signal that could affect the timeline further.

The combination of a promising gameplay reveal, active alpha testing, and a studio sale happening almost simultaneously makes for an unusually eventful stretch for a game that spent years operating largely under the radar. It also serves as a reminder of just how much internal restructuring has been reshaping Xbox’s first-party portfolio over the past year, even as individual projects like this one continue moving forward on their own development timelines.

With a February 2027 window now on the books and Undead Labs settling into its new ownership structure, the next several months should bring clearer answers about exactly what changes, if any, players will notice by the time State of Decay 3 finally arrives. For now, the message from the studio remains consistent: the game is still coming, new owners and all.
