Does Opera GX Actually Help With Gaming Performance?

Opera GX is marketed as “the world’s first gaming browser,” complete with a RAM limiter, CPU limiter, and a network bandwidth limiter bundled under a feature called GX Control. The pitch is simple: your browser is stealing resources your game needs, and Opera GX gives them back. That’s a compelling story, but does it actually translate into more frames per second, or is it a clever bit of branding wrapped around features that exist in other browsers too? The honest answer is somewhere in the middle, and it depends heavily on your hardware and how you configure it.

What GX Control Actually Does

GX Control is Opera GX’s built-in resource management panel, and it has three parts. The RAM limiter lets you set a hard ceiling on how much memory the browser is allowed to use, forcing it to unload background tabs when it hits that limit. The CPU limiter caps the percentage of processor time Opera GX can consume. The network limiter throttles how much bandwidth the browser uses for downloads and page loads, which can matter if you’re gaming while something updates or downloads in the background.

None of these are exotic technologies. Chrome has a Memory Saver mode that unloads inactive tabs, and Windows’ own Task Manager and Resource Monitor let you see and, with third-party tools, restrict process usage. What Opera GX does differently is put all of this in one visible, easy-to-use panel and market it specifically at gamers, which is a real usability advantage even if the underlying mechanism (discarding inactive tabs, throttling a process) isn’t new.

Does the RAM Limiter Actually Reduce Memory Use

Yes, and this part isn’t just marketing. When you set a fixed RAM limit in Opera GX, the browser works to stay near that ceiling by unloading tabs you aren’t actively using, similar to how Chrome’s Memory Saver behaves. On a system with a modest amount of RAM, say 8 to 16 GB, this can measurably reduce the memory footprint of the browser during a gaming session, especially if you’re the type of person who keeps twenty tabs open including Discord, YouTube, a wiki page, and a Twitch stream.

The catch is that this comes with tradeoffs. If you set the limit aggressively low, tabs and extensions that need memory can slow down, become unresponsive, or crash more often on media-heavy pages. The limiter doesn’t create memory out of nothing; it just decides more aggressively what to sacrifice. If you set it too low for your actual browsing habits, you’ll notice tabs reloading constantly, which defeats the point.

Does It Actually Improve FPS in Games

This is where the marketing gets ahead of the evidence a bit. The realistic gain from freeing up 1 to 3 GB of RAM and a modest chunk of CPU headroom is small in most cases, particularly on a modern gaming PC with 16 GB or more of RAM and a mid-range or better CPU where the browser was never the bottleneck to begin with. Your GPU is doing the heavy lifting in most games, and Chrome or Opera sitting in the background rarely pushes a well-specced system into a memory or CPU shortage severe enough to tank frame rates.

Where the difference becomes noticeable is on lower-end or older hardware, laptops with 8 GB of RAM, or systems already running close to their limits with background apps, Discord, OBS, and a browser all fighting for the same resources. In those cases, freeing up RAM and capping how much CPU the browser can steal can reduce stutter and improve 1% low frame times, which is the kind of smoothness gamers actually feel even if the average FPS number doesn’t move much. Competitive players chasing frame-time consistency are more likely to notice this than someone playing single-player games on a high-end rig.

Is This Just Marketing, Then

Partly, yes. Opera GX leans hard into gamer aesthetics, RGB theming, Discord and Twitch integrations, and branding that positions a browser limiter as a performance tool on par with graphics settings. In reality, GX Control is a resource-management feature that exists in various forms across other browsers and operating systems; Opera GX just packages it more visibly and pitches it directly at people who care about frame rates. The features are real and functional, but the framing oversells how much a browser, any browser, is typically responsible for gaming performance problems on a reasonably modern machine.

It’s also worth noting that Opera GX is not automatically lighter than Chrome. It’s built on the same Chromium engine, so its baseline memory usage without the limiter enabled is comparable to Chrome’s. The performance benefit doesn’t come from Opera GX being inherently more efficient; it comes from the limiter actively restricting what would otherwise be normal Chromium memory behavior.

How to Configure GX Control If You Want to Try It

If you want to test whether this helps your setup, don’t set the limiters to the most extreme value. A RAM limit of 2 to 4 GB is a reasonable starting point on most systems, adjusted depending on your total available memory. For the CPU limiter, starting around 25 to 50 percent avoids strangling the browser to the point of unusability while still reserving headroom for your game. Watch for symptoms of overcorrection: tabs that keep reloading, extensions that stop working, or a laggy browsing experience while the game is running. If you see those, ease the limits back up.

It’s also worth pairing GX Control with basic hygiene that helps in any browser: closing tabs you aren’t using, disabling extensions you don’t need running in the background, and checking Task Manager to see what your browser is actually consuming before assuming it’s the bottleneck in the first place.

When a Browser Limiter Won’t Fix Your FPS Problem

If your frame rate issues are severe, stuttering below what your GPU should be capable of, dropped frames, or crashes, a browser resource limiter is unlikely to be the fix. Those symptoms point more often to GPU driver issues, thermal throttling, background Windows updates, insufficient VRAM for the game’s settings, or a CPU bottleneck unrelated to the browser at all. It’s worth ruling those out with GPU-Z, HWiNFO, or your game’s own performance overlay before assuming your browser is the culprit. A browser using 2 GB of RAM in the background is rarely the reason a modern GPU is dropping below 60 FPS.

The Honest Verdict

GX Control’s limiters are real, functional features that can measurably reduce Opera GX’s resource footprint, and on lower-spec or resource-constrained systems, that can translate into smoother frame times and less stutter during gaming sessions. On a well-specced modern gaming PC, the FPS difference is likely to be small to negligible, because the browser was probably never your actual bottleneck. Opera GX’s marketing frames this as a core gaming performance tool, but it’s more accurately described as a genuinely useful resource-management feature that happens to matter most for the exact audience Opera is targeting: people gaming on older or budget hardware while running a browser full of tabs in the background. If that’s you, it’s worth trying. If you’re on a high-end rig, don’t expect it to move the needle much.
